The blennioid fishes of the suborder Blennioidei are widely distributed in Chinese coastal waters and the Indo-west Pacific. The fauna composition of the blennioid fishes from Chinese waters is represented by 8 families, 33 gene ra and 78 species. The Chinese blennioid fishes comprise three species types: warm-water, warm-temperate and cold-temperate. The warm-water fishes are large in number, comprise 40 species (51.3% of the total). The warm-temperate fishes are fewer, comprise 28 species (35.9% of the total). The cold-temperate fishes are fewest in number, comprise 10 species (12.8% of the total). According to the geographical distributional character, all the Chinese blennioid fishes are grouped in to four types:(1) the circumtropical-sub tropical type, with 2 species (2.6% of the total); (2) the Indo-West Pacific type, with 24 species (30.8% of the total); (3) the West-Pacific type, with 51 species (65.3% of the total); (4) the endemic type of Chinese waters, with only 1 species (1.3% of the total).
