The tridacnids or giant clams live in shallow waters of tropical coral reefs. The distribution of this group is limited to the Indo-Pacific region. Up to date, only six species are reported living today. The Xisha Islands affords a suitable habitat for these clams, all six species being found here. Hippopus hippopus (Linnaeus )is known for their large size, the largest reported specimen being 397 mm long, collected from Palm Island off Queensland (Hedley, 1923). Other large records are 329 mm (Rosewater, 1965)and 336 mm(Smith 1898), both from the Philippines. The largest specimen from the Xisha Islands measures 380 mm.
