The Storm surge modele proposed by Jelesnianski as a means for forecasting and adopted by the U. S. National Weather Service has drawn much attention internationally in recent years. We tried to determine the relationship between the maximum velocity values and. its barometric fluctuations of centre of typhoon under the cyclostrophic wind condition, to obtain the depth profile correction factor in some Chinese ports by similarity method, and to forecast experimentally the continental-bound typhoon off the Chinese southeast coasts with the nomograph as proposed by Jelesnianski. The accuracy of this method as shown by our experiments is fairly good as long as all the requirements of this modele are satisfied. However, this modele has not taken into consideration the wind stress, abnormality of the sea surface, wave set-up and rainfalls, The forecaster is required to pay attentions to such factors as their effects cannot be neglected.
