Surface sediments were analyzed for mineralogical composition, grain size and chemical content, from these data, it is possible to draw the following conclusions. The primary source of both the coarse sediments (> 0.01mm) and the fine sediments (< 0.01mm) is the Hai He (Hai River). The influence of Hai He on the settlement of mud-sands in the Port of Tanggu is as follows: mud-sands discharged from the Hai He move southward and mix with those discharged from the Huang He (Yellow River) to form a mud-shoal, some of them, however, move northward to meet with those discharged from Luan He (Luanho River) to accumulate there. Some of those mud-sands, under the flow action of the Hai He, move toward the sea to reach at a depth of 15m, approximately 20km from the present shoreline. The formation of huge mud-shoal off the New port is the direct action of the mud-sands discharged from the Hai He.
